Apparent Near Drowning at 8th Street Pool
An 8 year old boy was flown to Banner-University Medical Center in Tucson after being found unresponsive in the pool at the Veteran’s Memorial Park on 8th Street in Douglas. At 2:16 p.m. Douglas Fire Department received a call for a possible drowning. The ambulance arrived in 3minutes and found an 8 year old male unresponsive and not breathing. The child had been removed from the pool by City of Douglas lifeguards, who initiated life saving efforts. CPR was performed as were other life saving measures. The 8 year old was then taken to a medical helicopter where he was flown to Banner-University Medical Center. Prior to the helicopter leaving the boy had a pulse and had started breathing again. The identity of the child is not being released at this time and any inquiries into his current condition should be directed to Banner-UMC ((520) 694-0111). The circumstances that led to the boy being found unresponsive are being investigated by Douglas Police Department.
In the first half of 2015 1 drowning/near drowning was reported in Cochise County per childrensafteyzone.com. That number may not be accurate, but with the health department closed more in depth or accurate statistics for Cochise County could not be readily found at this time. Douglas Fire Department would like to remind everyone to keep a close eye on children around any water.
