CITY OF DOUGLAS CITY CLERK ANNOUNCES UPCOMING 2008 CITY PRIMARY ELECTION

City of Douglas City Clerk Brenda Aguilar announced today the election cycle for the upcoming 2008 City Primary Election.   The 2008 Primary Election is set for Tuesday, March 11, 2008, to elect a Mayor and Council members for Wards 1, 3 and 5.

                Interested candidates will be able to pick up nominating petitions at the City Clerk’s office starting on November 13, 2007, and will have until 5:00 p.m. on December 12, 2007, to file them with the City Clerk in order for their name to appear on the ballot.

                Candidates for Mayor must be registered voters, at least twenty-five years old. Candidates cannot hold any other paid public office and must have physically resided within the City limits for at least three consecutive years preceding the date of the election.

                Candidates for City Council must be registered voters, at least twenty-one years old.  They cannot hold any other paid public office and must have physically resided within the City limits for at least three consecutive years preceding the date of the election.  Additionally, Council candidates must have physically resided within the ward in which they seek election for one year preceding the date of the election. 

                Because of term limitations imposed by the City Charter, Ward 1 Councilman  Robert Marrufo cannot seek reelection.   Mayor Ray Borane, Ward 3 Councilman Ben La Forge and Ward 5 Councilman Ivan Huish are eligible to run for reelection for another term.   As yet, none of the incumbents have declared their intentions to seek re- election. Eligible voters who are not registered have until February 11, 2008, to register in to vote in the Primary Election.  Voter registration forms are available at the City  Clerk’s office at City Hall, the Douglas Public Library at 560 E. Tenth Street and at County Government Offices.    Only registered voters can sign nominating petitions and, if you are signing a ward candidate’s nominating petition, you must be registered to vote in that ward.

                If in the Primary Election, one candidate for Mayor does not receive a majority of  the votes cast, the two candidates with the highest number of votes will appear on the ballot of the General Election on May 20, 2008. 

If one candidate in each ward Council race does not receive a majority of the votes cast, the two candidates with the highest number of votes will appear on the ballot at the General Election.
