Watson

Mrs. Watson is an ICMA-CM (International City/County Management Assoc.) credentialed city manager. She has served Arizonans in two cities as a city manager and two cities as a deputy or assistant city manager, capping a 38-year career that included working for the Mayor of Phoenix and building a Community Services department from scratch in the Phoenix suburb of Goodyear. Her career working in the public sector started as a professional staff member in the US Senate, learning about our federal government at work which sparked her passion for public service. Experience she brings to our city came from her work not only in mega organizations, but a mid-sized city (Omaha, Nebraska) and smaller communities serving the residents of Goodyear, Oro Valley, Flagstaff and Douglas, Arizona.

Jerene was born in the Midwest, grew up in the Phoenix area where her family moved in her childhood and she remained until early adulthood when she and her husband moved to Switzerland while he pursued graduate work. Jerene was educated at institutions in the Northwestern US, Gulf Coast and East Coast, completing her Master of Public Administration degree at Old Dominion University in the early 1990s. She returned with her husband and two daughters to Arizona again in 1994. She has enjoyed her career in local government where working with residents and community groups has been a highlight of running a city, coupled with dedicated employees who are dedicated to the noble profession of public service. In 2014 she was honored to receive the statewide Gabe Zimmermann Award for Civic Engagement, presented by the Center For Arizona’s Future.
