OVERVIEW - The Sanitation Division collects more than 700 tons per year of residential, commercial refuse, recyclables, and bulk trash annually form more than 4,300 households. Refuse and bulk trash are delivered to a local Refuse Transfer Station owned and operated by Cochise County, Facilities and Solid Waste. Recyclables are delivered to the City’s recycling facility located within the premises of the Refuse Transfer Station located at 90 W. 9th Street.

Staff provides twice weekly residential collection services. Residents are allowed to dispose up to 6-32 gallon trash container per pick-up day. Garbage containers shall not weigh more than 65 pounds, garbage shall be bagged. All large items of refuse such as boxes, cartons, and crates over twenty-eight inches on any one side shall be collapsed for easy handling. Residents may dispose of yard, tree trimmings, branches and limbs may be placed outside waste receptacles, provided that the trimmings, branches and limbs are cut into no more than four-foot lengths and tied into bundles not larger than eighteen inches in diameter when placed out for collection. The total weight of any bundle shall not exceed sixty five pounds.

As outlined in the Douglas Municipal Code it is the responsibility of the owner or occupant of property to dispose of large bulk items such as mattresses, appliances, furniture, tree trunks and tires. If an owner or occupant or residential property desires, it can be arranged for the City crews to dispose of these bulk items for an extra fee.

Sanitation Division staff enforces section 8.16 of the Douglas Municipal Code, which protects the health, safety and environment of the citizens of Douglas by establishing minimum standards for the storage, collection, treatment, transportation, processing and disposal of municipal solid waste.
