Support Services Division

The primary mission of the Support Services Division is to support the Uniform Patrol element.  The Support Services Division consists of two sections; the Investigation Section and the Records/Communications Section.

Investigation Section

The Investigation Section conducts the preliminary and follow-up investigations for most felony crimes reported to the police department including:

Deaths:

  • Homicides.

  • Unattended deaths or sudden death.

  • Accidental deaths, including traffic related deaths.

Burglary:

  • Commercial.

  • Residential - (note: when the loss of property is under $5,000 the preliminary investigation is conducted by the uniform officer responding).

Theft:

  • Thefts - (note: when the loss of property is under $3,000 the preliminary investigation is conducted by the uniform officer responding).

  • Embezzlements.

Robbery:

  • Bank/Financial institutions.

  • Armed robbery.

  • Strong arm - excluding purse snatching.

Sexual Offenses:

  • Sexual assault.

  • Sexual abuse.

  • Sexual conduct with a minor.

Assaults:

  • Aggravated assaults.

Kidnapping, Arson, Bombings, Drugs/Narcotics, Other

  • Whenever the uniform patrol supervisor deems it necessary, he may request that a detective be assigned to conduct preliminary and follow-up of any case.

Records/Communications Section

The responsibilities assigned to this section are:

  • Answering the telephone for citizen complaints, requests for service, questions or comments and directing the calls to the appropriate person or unit of the police department.

  • Dispatching police and fire personnel in response to calls for service.  Operating specialized equipment such as radios, fax machines, computers and computer consoles, teletype machines, and copy machines.

  • Entering information from department reports into the department's computer data base for criminal and statistical analysis.

  • Entering information on wants and warrants, stolen property, missing persons, and other pertinent data into the ACJIS/NCIC computer system.

  • Controlling police reports, including accessibility, availability and confidentiality.

  • Maintaining records to include indexing or numbering, distribution, retention, and purging.

  • Retrieving of records in response to requests for information.

  • Maintaining the wants and warrants file.

  • Compiling the monthly Uniformed Crime Report to the FBI.
