CODE PROCESS
Complaints: Complaints are received over the Internet, telephone or in written form. Complainant's name
is held confidential unless the City Attorney or Municipal Court Judge issues a subpoena for the Complainant
to testify in Court. Complaints are received and investigated in a timely manner.
Inspections: Code Enforcement Officers will conduct routine daily inspections of properties on any
given day in sectors within the Corporate City Limits. After a notice of violation has been issued,
a compliance inspection will be conducted on the date specified.
Notification Process: A Notice of Violation and Intent to Record Notice of Noncompliance are issued if
a violation exists. Notices will be issued either by person, phone, door hanger or by U.S. Mail. Once a
notice is issued, it is the responsibility of the recipient to make any necessary corrections to comply.
Civil Charges: If voluntary compliance is not achieved, code enforcement cases are pursued by filing a civil
citation and holding Nuisance Abatement arraignment. Code enforcement cases will be directed to the Municipal
Court Judge for filing of civil charges. Depending on the violation, if found guilty, the defendant can face
fines of up to $2,500.00 per violation and/or 6 months in jail. An appearance at a hearing is required to
contest the alleged violation. The notice will state the date, time and place for your hearing. Failure to
appear will result in an automatic default judgment.
