Ivan D. Huish was born on July 18, 1934. In those days many children were born at home so he was born at 1024 5th Street in Douglas, Arizona. During his younger years he participated in many of the Douglas youth programs, including coaching Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and girl's softball. Pursuant to his love for sports he also became a certified high school and college football, basketball, and baseball official and enjoyed that activity for 20 years.
He attended Douglas schools graduating in 1952. In high school he participated in the school athletic programs and enjoyed a great deal of success participating in football, basketball, baseball, and track. During his high school years he met a girl from Bisbee named Betty Pomroy, and in 1953 he convinced her that they should be married. There have been 8 children born of this union namely Ivan Lee, David, Cindy, Joey, Marilyn, Sheri, Robert, and Tim. Ivan and Betty are blessed with 30 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in 2007. Ivan has been a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many leadership capacities in his church including Bishop of the Douglas Ward. After high school he went to work for Phelps Dodge Corporation at their Douglas Reduction Works.
He became the Electrical Superintendent for Phelps Dodge and retired when the plant closed in 1987. Today he still serves in leadership positions in his church, but limits his athletic pursuits to playing golf. He also serves as the city council representative for Ward 5 here in Douglas.
